The Evidence Technician (SO) is required to process and maintain law enforcement evidence and related records. Receive and maintain appropriate chain of custody of property and evidence. Transfer evidence as needed. Process, preserve, and destroy evidence appropriately. Enter data into the records management system.

  • Receive and maintain evidence using a computerized inventory system. Maintain the integrity of all evidence by performing accurate case intake, verification of system entry, packaging to standards and maintaining proper inventories. Complete scheduled audits and inventories.
  • Respond to inquiries from the public and department personnel. Prepare and present viewings of evidence for district and defense attorneys. Instruct and train agency personnel regarding evidence policies and procedures. 
  • Import, receive, stage, return, and inventory evidence submitted to the Jefferson County Regional Crime Lab. Resolve submittal issues as needed.
  • Administer evidence management processes associated with the receipt, security, maintenance, release, and disposal of evidence generated, using established guidelines and procedures.
  • Conduct NCIC/CCIC computer file searches and queries on weapons and other items of evidence prior to transfer or release. Screen incoming calls, schedule appointments, prepare and send out return property letters, take and transmit messages, maintain calendars, key information into databases, make photocopies, enter data, type, and word processing. Maintain evidence packaging supplies as well as perform general housekeeping of the evidence vault facility on a routine basis.
  • Destroy or depose of evidence using established procedures. Ascertain proper paperwork has been submitted. Determine method of disposition/destruction. Coordinate destructions with appropriate personnel and transport dispositioned property to disposal facility as needed.
  • Manage the offsite facilities to include the secured vehicle impound lot, explosive magazine, and hazardous materials locker locations. 
  • Comply with applicable subpoenas. Testify as directed in court procedures.
  • Attend required agency trainings and meetings.
  • Transport evidence off-site for lab analysis and court. Operate county vehicles in compliance with county policy, as well as state and federal laws when transporting property and evidence.
  • Provide after-hours on-call assistance on a rotational basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred - 1-2 years of law enforcement or clerical-administrative experience.
