First-time applicants for a concealed handgun permit in Colorado, or applicants whose permits are expired past 182 days, or whose permits have been denied or revoked.
Requirements:
- Valid Colorado driver's license/ID
- Proof of Jefferson County residency
- 10 years of address history

Renewal CHP Application
Renew your existing Colorado permit before it expires. Begin renewal up to 120 days before expiration.
Requirements:
- Valid Colorado driver's license/ID
- Proof of Jefferson County residency
- 10 years of address history
- Training documentation pursuant to C.R.S. § 18-12-211(3)
- Copy of current permit
- Current photo of yourself

Late Renewal
If your permit has expired, you may renew within 182 days of expiration for a fee of $78.00.

CHP Address Change Application

Requirements:
- Valid Colorado driver's license/ID
- Proof of new Colorado residency
- Copy of current permit (cannot be expired; must be issued from Jefferson County)

CHP Name Change Application

Requirements:
- Valid Colorado driver's license/ID
- Proof of Colorado residency

- Proof of new legal name (driver's license, marriage certificate, or court order)

CHP Lost/Stolen/Destroyed Application
Replace a lost, stolen, or destroyed Jefferson County concealed handgun permit.
Requirements:
- Valid Colorado driver's license/ID

- Notarized affidavit (link is on the application)
- Current photo of yourself

Training Requirements
Documentation accepted to demonstrate handgun competence under Colorado law.
Each statute provision below lists an accepted form of documentation. Items marked JCSO Agency Requirement indicate Jefferson County Sheriff's Office implementation requirements that are not specified in the statute.
(h) Demonstrates competence with a handgun by submitting:
(I) Evidence of experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competitions, current military service, or current certification as a peace officer pursuant to article 2.5 of title 16;
JCSO Agency Requirements
- Shooting competitions: Two or more documented competitions within 1 year of application; must demonstrate 70% score or higher
- Active military: Provide active military ID and documentation of competency with a handgun
- Peace officer: Provide a valid Colorado law enforcement officer ID
(II) Evidence that, at the time the application is submitted, the applicant is a certified instructor;
JCSO Agency Requirement
Applicant must provide a valid instructor certification card.
(III) Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States armed forces within the three years preceding submittal of the application;
(IV) Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States armed forces that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application;
(V) A certificate showing retirement from a Colorado law enforcement agency that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application; or

Applicant must provide a retired Colorado law enforcement officer ID or badge along with a letter or certificate from the retiring agency.
(VI) A training certificate from a concealed handgun training class obtained within the one year preceding submittal of the application. The applicant shall submit the original training certificate that includes the printed name and original signature of the verified instructor. To the extent permitted by section 18-12-202.5, in obtaining a training certificate from a concealed handgun training class, the applicant has discretion in selecting which concealed handgun training class to complete.
(3) A permittee seeking renewal pursuant to this section may demonstrate competence with a handgun by submitting:
(a) Evidence of demonstrating competence with firearms through participation in organized shooting competitions, current military service, or current certification as a peace officer pursuant to article 2.5 of title 16;

(b) Evidence that, at the time the application is submitted, the applicant is a verified instructor;

(c) Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States armed forces that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the renewal form;
(d) A certificate showing retirement from a Colorado law enforcement agency that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the renewal form; or

Applicant must provide a retired Colorado law enforcement officer ID or badge along with a letter or certificate from the retiring agency.
(e) A training certificate that includes the original signature of the class instructor from a concealed handgun training class or a refresher class, described in section 18-12-202.5, obtained within six months prior to submitting a renewal form.
Verified Instructor Certificate Required — Effective July 1, 2025
All new and renewal CHP applicants must provide a training certificate from a verified instructor if they cannot demonstrate competence with a handgun through other documentation pursuant to C.R.S. § 18-12-203(1)(h) (new applicants) or C.R.S. § 18-12-211(3) (renewal applicants). Out-of-state training certificates are not accepted.
How to Apply
All applications and payments are submitted electronically through Permitium, Jefferson County's online permitting system. Incomplete applications are not accepted.
A copy of your original training certificate is required at the time of application. Fingerprint scheduling is completed through the online application.

Important Information
Carry Restrictions
Colorado law prohibits carrying concealed handguns in certain locations even with a valid permit:
- • K-12 schools and school grounds
- • Public buildings with security screening
- • Private property where prohibited by owner
- • Federal facilities

Colorado CHP permits are recognized in many other states. Check reciprocity before traveling.

CHP permits are valid for 5 years from the date of issuance. You can begin the renewal process up to 120 days before your permit expires.
Training Certificate
Your original handgun competency training certificate must have been issued within 1 year preceding your application date for new applications, and within 6 months for renewal applicants.
Jurisdiction
You must submit your CHP application to the sheriff's office in the county where you reside, own property, or own a business.
