Jefferson County Sheriff's Office

Patrol Division

Deputies patrol unincorporated Jefferson County around the clock, responding to emergencies and enforcing criminal and traffic laws from three community-based precincts.

Community-Based Precincts

Deputies work out of three community-based stations strategically located across the county. The county jail and Sheriff's Office headquarters are located at the county government complex in Golden. Both the South and Mountain precincts offer walk-in services.

Specialized Units

Special Operations

Comprised of six special units responsible for tasks outside routine patrol, including high-crime areas, traffic problems, special event security, VIP and dignitary security, and liquor code enforcement.

Traffic Unit

Responsible for proactively reducing crashes by targeting high-risk violations, responding to community concerns, and educating the public on safe driving practices.

K-9 Unit

Used in high-risk situations such as building searches, tracking suspects, and discovery of concealed narcotics and explosives.

School Resource Officers

School Resource Officers serve as liaisons between the Sheriff's Office and students, parents, and school administrators throughout Jefferson County. They play a critical role in maintaining school safety and preparedness by working closely with school staff to plan for, prevent, and respond to potential threats. In addition, they build trust within the school community, provide law-related education, mentor students, and help foster a safe and secure learning environment.

SWAT

A select group of deputies and support staff from JCSO and the Arvada, Edgewater, and Golden Police Departments. Used in high-risk incidents involving barricaded subjects or hostages.

Bicycle Unit

Deputies assigned to the Bicycle Unit provide a visible presence that helps deter crime, particularly in crowded areas and during community events. Each deputy completes specialized training in mountain bike operations and community policing strategies, allowing them to effectively patrol areas that may be less accessible to traditional patrol vehicles while maintaining positive engagement with the community.

Crisis Intervention Team

The Sheriff's Office trains deputies in crisis intervention skills to provide better services to mentally ill people in our community. Deputies are able to identify characteristics of mental illness, skillfully intervene in a crisis, and connect individuals with resources.

The program recruits deputies for a 40-hour training course involving expert lecturers, role-playing scenarios, and visits to local mental-health facilities. Certified deputies wear a CIT pin on their uniforms.

Mental Health Case Management

In 2014, the Sheriff's Office partnered with the Jefferson Center for Mental Health to launch a case‑management program staffed by two licensed behavioral‑health clinicians serving unincorporated Jefferson County. The model proved highly effective, prompting four additional agencies — the Arvada, Golden, Lakewood, and Wheat Ridge Police Departments — to adopt similar approaches. Building on the success of this collaboration, the Sheriff's Office approved the creation of a fully in‑house program in 2026.
