Laboratory Units

Latent Print Section

The Latent Print Section is responsible for processing evidence for latent prints, comparing latent prints developed at crime scenes to known suspects, and searching unidentified latent prints through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and through the FBI's Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS).

Drug Chemistry Section

The Drug Chemistry Section is responsible for identifying suspected drugs for the presence of controlled substances.

Forensic Biology Section

The Forensic Biology Section is divided into two areas: Serology and DNA. In the Serology section, analysts examine crime scene evidence for the presence of biological fluids such as blood, semen, and saliva. In the DNA section, analysts perform STR DNA analysis on examined items. DNA profiles can be compared to known individuals and entered into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), the national DNA database. The section may also perform male-specific DNA analysis utilizing YSTRs for certain cases.

Firearms Section

The Firearms Section is responsible for examining firearms to determine their ability to function and performing microscopic comparison of fired ammunition components to determine same-source or different-source relationships. The section also searches scene or test-fired cartridge cases through the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) database and performs serial number restoration on firearms.
