Information about retrieving your property, found items, and evidence from Sheriff's Office investigations.
About the Evidence Unit
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Evidence Unit is responsible for the secure storage and management of all property and evidence collected during criminal investigations. This includes found property, recovered stolen items, and evidence held for court proceedings.
Property may only be released when it is no longer needed for investigation or legal proceedings, and only to the rightful owner or their authorized representative.
Types of Property We Hold
Found Property
Items turned in to the Sheriff's Office as found property. If not claimed within 90 days, items may be disposed of or auctioned per Colorado law.

- • Keys
- • Jewelry
Recovered Stolen Property
Items recovered during investigations that have been identified as stolen. Release requires verification of ownership.
- • Must provide proof of ownership
- • May require case detective approval
- • May be held until case is resolved
Case Evidence
Items held as evidence in criminal cases. These items cannot be released until the case is closed or the court authorizes release.
- • Requires case closure or court order
- • Detective must authorize release
- • May be subject to destruction orders
Impounded Vehicles
Vehicles towed and held by the Sheriff's Office are stored at contracted tow yards, not at our facility.

How to Retrieve Property
Call to Verify Availability
Call the Evidence Unit at (303) 271-5656 to verify that your property is available for release. Not all property can be released, and some items may require additional authorization.
Schedule an Appointment
Property releases are by appointment only. When you call, we will schedule a time for you to pick up your property.
Bring Required Documentation
When you arrive for your appointment, you must have:
- Valid government-issued photo ID
- Case number (if applicable)
- Proof of ownership (for found or recovered property)
- Power of attorney if claiming for someone else
Important Information
Firearms
Firearms require additional verification before release. You must pass a background check and provide proof of legal ownership. Some firearms may be destroyed per court order. Contact us for specific requirements.
Unclaimed Property
Property that is not claimed within the legally required time period (typically 90 days for found property, or after case closure for evidence) may be disposed of, donated, or sold at auction in accordance with Colorado law.
Property We Cannot Return
- Illegal contraband (drugs, illegal weapons, etc.)
- Items ordered destroyed by the court
- Hazardous materials
- Perishable items that have deteriorated
