Types of Warrants

Arrest Warrants

Issued by a judge when there is probable cause to believe a person has committed a crime. Arrest warrants authorize law enforcement to take the named individual into custody.

  • May be issued for felonies or misdemeanors
  • Bond may or may not be set by the court

Bench Warrants

Issued by a judge when someone fails to appear for a scheduled court date or violates a court order. Common for failure to appear (FTA) situations.

  • Often issued for missed court dates
  • May include additional failure to appear charges

Search Warrants

Authorize law enforcement to search specific locations for evidence related to a crime. Search warrants are executed by deputies, not served on individuals.

  • Requires probable cause and judicial approval
  • Limited to specific locations and items described in the warrant

Resolving a Warrant

1

Turn Yourself In (Recommended)

Voluntarily turning yourself in shows the court that you are taking responsibility. This is often viewed favorably by judges.

  • Come to the Jefferson County Detention Facility
  • Bring valid identification
  • Be prepared to post bond if one has been set
2

Contact an Attorney

An attorney may be able to help you understand your options and potentially arrange for a court date to resolve the matter without immediate arrest.

If you cannot afford an attorney, you may qualify for a public defender after appearing in court.

3

Post Bond

If a bond has been set, you or someone on your behalf can post bond to secure release while awaiting your court date.

  • Cash bonds accepted at the jail
  • Surety bonds through licensed bondsmen
