Community Engagement Initiatives

Our Community Engagement Initiatives connect residents, partners, and fire agencies through wildfire education, free home assessments, training, and evacuation planning. By working together, we strengthen countywide preparedness, promote mitigation actions, and build a more wildfire-resilient Jefferson County.

Jefferson County Wildland Fire Management

Wildfire Risk Education

The program promotes county-wide outreach campaigns to educate and engage residents, emphasizing wildfire preparedness, mitigation, and resilience. Through schools, community events, and media, it encourages defensible space, home hardening, and awareness of climate change impacts to wildfire risk, while encouraging personal responsibility and participation in strategic projects such as risk mitigation projects and Firewise programs. Efforts include teaching home hardening and defensible space strategies, incentivizing property-level mitigation, and providing tools and resources to reduce wildfire risk across Jefferson County.

Home Assessments

A county-wide home assessment program promotes defensible space, home hardening, and preparedness practices. Through these recommendations, homeowners and communities will be better equipped to mitigate hazards and implement sustainable wildfire risk-reduction actions across the county.

Training and Exercise

Training programs and exercises provide program staff, partners, and citizens with resources and tools to support risk mitigation, preparedness, and the priorities in the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) (PDF) (opens in new tab), strengthening public awareness and wildfire readiness.

Evacuation Planning

Evacuation planning focuses on supporting evacuation preparedness and educating residents on go-bags, routes, and procedures to ensure safe evacuations and lessen wildfire impacts to communities.

Grant Resources

Grant funding is utilized for county-wide mitigation projects, outreach and education, public meetings, media campaigns, toolkits for partners, and other wildfire initiatives, with oversight by program staff. Additionally, financial incentive programs will empower local fire departments, communities, and homeowners to design and implement their own wildfire mitigation projects across the county.

The Jeffco WFMP believes in strong collaboration and values its partners that contribute to and support the program and its efforts. No one entity can do it alone, it does really take a village and there is much work to do.

Lookout Alert: Jefferson County Emergency Notifications

Lookout Alert is Jefferson County's free emergency notification system. When emergencies occur, registered residents receive Lookout Alert messages by phone call, text, and email with critical information about wildfires, severe weather, evacuations, and other public-safety incidents.
